Continuing Medical Education: Introduction to a Niche Field

Addie’s presentation introduces continuing medical education and continuing education (CME/CE) as a specialty area for medical writers. Attendees will gain an overview of the CME/CE landscape, the medical writer’s role in the educational development process, and the types of projects writers may encounter. The discussion will explore work across the educational lifecycle, from identifying practice gaps and developing needs assessments to creating educational content such as slide decks, case-based activities, and microlearning. The presentation will also distinguish between grant-development work, which establishes and supports the educational need, and content-development work, which translates those needs into engaging, evidence-based education for healthcare professionals.

Kristen’s presentation introduces the strategic role of needs assessments in securing funding for continuing medical education (CME) initiatives. Attendees will gain an overview of key CME stakeholders and learn how medical writers can move beyond basic literature reviews by leveraging targeted research techniques, such as expert insights, outcomes data, and pipeline analyses. The presentation will also highlight practical strategies to help medical writers transform into strategic architects, framing clinical challenges around impact-focused outcomes.
